The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers – A New York City Wedding

Carly and Rob were married last year in a beautiful setting.. It was a sunny, cool early March air that was perfect for walking around Washington Square Park and the Union Square area.

The ceremony and reception took place at the elegant Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, one of the exclusive properties of Abigail Kirsch. I’ve had the pleasure to photograph a handful of weddings in these venues including a few at Stage 6 (in the Brooklyn Navy Yard) and love every opportunity I’ve had there.

Carly and Rob both had beautiful smiles and the bride particularly felt so comfortable in front of the camera we got some really fun shots together. I also had the extremely talented wedding photographer Olivia Leigh fly in from Chicago to be my second photographer.

It was such a beautiful wedding, enjoy the photos!

Commitment Ceremony – Brooklyn Wedding Photography

Last night I met with a wonderful couple getting married in the Catskills this summer. They were referred to me by Lauren and Erin, a couple who hired me to photograph their same sex marriage a few years ago in Brooklyn. The memory of that beautiful day motivated me to blog that wedding today.

I really enjoyed photographing Lauren and Erin’s special day and was excited when they asked if I would shoot some film. I offer either a few rolls of Holga or Hasselblad as wedding option..and always encourage couples when they show some interest.

The wedding took place at ICI restaurant in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Photographing weddings in Brooklyn is always a good time for me, and having the chance to share a commitment ceremony and shoot some Hasselblad was all very cool! I think I captured some really romantic shots and tried to show how beautiful these women looked, focusing on the colors of the day into the night.

Also an update..thank you to Kat at Rock ‘n Roll Bride for blogging this commitment ceremony.. Kat runs a particuarly cool wedding website which features unique, wonderfully creative weddings and I’m excited she’s posted photographs from this one. Check out the link here on Rock ‘n Roll Bride.

I wanted to start with a Wedding Slideshow I made for them:

Some examples of Hasselblad Wedding Photographs here: The ceremony was really emotional, at one point I looked over to my assistant who was so caught up in speeches that she wasn’t taking photos!  She saw me looking at her and quickly realized she wasn’t taking photos and started shooting again..it was kinda funny.

February 19, 2010 - 2:16 pm Richard - Really powerful shots. Feel like I'm a part of their intimate celebration. Great job capturing the beauty of this event!

February 19, 2010 - 2:32 pm Brad Ross Photography - Stunning work.

February 19, 2010 - 7:26 pm Matt Penning - I'm sitting here stunned with awe. Two absolutely over the top for me: Girl drinking wine, looking off - such punch and interest. The two betrothed kissing against the red wall under lights - a superb capture of loving emotion.

February 22, 2010 - 9:31 am Dawn - I was lucky enough to come across these photos while researching photographers for my wedding last year. I instantly fell in love with your work the moment I saw the one of the two girls kissing under the light. I knew that you would be able to capture all of the love & emotion of our wedding day. You have such a wonderful eye and fantastic talent and I couldn't be happier with the results :) Thanks Daniel!

February 22, 2010 - 10:11 am Jon-Bentley Wiggins - Great compositions. I can tell you connected with the brides.

February 22, 2010 - 11:50 am Dognbird - Wonderful, romantic photos. The brides look beautiful!

February 25, 2010 - 7:58 pm Lauren - Daniel did a great job capturing the many emotions of the day--the photos are exactly what we wanted. Thanks for re-posting! It was a nice walk down memory lane :)

Adnan Sabir – East Village Musician and friend

Adnan is one of my closest friends, having met him during college we’ve stayed close through the past 10 years, both calling New York City our home.

I remember listening to him sing Chris Isaac’s Wicked game in the UCONN bathroom (he sang in there because of the amazing aucostics..at least I think that’s why) and he nailed that tune perfectly. Now he’s writing his own songs, some of which I really love listening to, being both catchy and having beautifully crafted lyrics.

Last week he was a featured singer at a bar out in Brooklyn named Ceol and I took a few photos..and a few months ago we did a photo session so he would have some band photographs for when he makes it big..which he will.

Don’t take my word for it.. have a listen yourself

February 16, 2010 - 8:52 pm Daniel Stark - great photos in this set! always pleased when i visit your blog!

February 17, 2010 - 4:25 pm Jordana - What a beautiful post Daniel. Having heard Adnan perform live myself, I'm with you that he's one to watch. Good luck!

NYC Snowstorm – Snowing in Brooklyn

New Orleans Photography – A beautiful, rich city

I wanted to congratulate all the Saints fans, who have been pateintly waiting for a Saints superbowl for the history of their franchise. I truly love New Orleans, a city with amazing colors, food, and wonderful people. I had the pleasure to visit the city twice, once with a friend a few years ago and then again last year with Jordana. We went down for Tales of the Cocktail, a week long celebration of drinking and learning about the art of cocktails.. it’s really a lot of fun especially if you partake in booze :)

I’m excited to say we’re going again this year and am definitely looking forward to it. Now lets move onto some photos.. here we have a pile of the most delicious dessert treats I’ve ever had, a plate of beignets at Cafe DuMonde, which were just as amazing as I remembered them.

NEW YORK TIMES – PATROON STEAKHOUSE

Last week I had my first published assignment for the New York Times and this week I’ve got my second one in (which I was actually assigned first but is running this week).

When I got the assignment it was pretty amazing that my editor said, “You’ll be shooting Patroon Steakhouse” because I’ve done a few shoots there already and have a great relationship with the owner and staff, I’ve even shot a wedding at this restaurant where Martha Stewart showed up as a guest!I couldn’t have asked for a better restaurant to have done it for.. it was really a beautiful stroke of luck.

Overall it was an amazing experience and I gave it my all, coming up with a lot of great shots I think. You can view the Dining brief written by Sam Sifton HERE and see three photos. It is going to appear in the print form as well.

And of course stick around and check out some more photos from the shoot below.. enjoy!

Destination Wedding to New York City – A winter getaway!

Mike and Anja were a lovely couple who came to me through facebook actually, all the way from Germany to get married in New York City. NYC is a beautiful place to have a winter wedding and I was lucky enough to be chosen to cover their special day.

We met up at City Hall, where they went to the Manhattan Marriage Bureau to have a quick ceremony. We then started off their wedding photo session in downtown Manhattan and crossed over the Brooklyn Bridge. This is a great way for anyone who wants to get married and experience New York City at the same time. What couples generally do who opt for this type of wedding is come to the States, have a lovely little holiday and then go back too their country of origin (Germany, UK, etc) and have a big party with all their friends and family. I think its a beautiful, original wedding idea.

So onto some photos:

February 1, 2010 - 12:08 pm Daniel Stark - wow--these are great! i love the on on the fire escape. super clean and crisp shots--awesome!

February 1, 2010 - 12:25 pm Brad Ross Photography - International Superstar! Great work DK

February 1, 2010 - 12:32 pm Susan - Me too - love the fire escape photo - all of them were great and what a wonderful idea for a wedding!

New York Times assignment – Le Caprice at the Pierre Hotel

Since I started getting into food/restaurant photography a few years I had one specific goal I always wanted to achieve, and that was to get an assignment for the New York Times. Today I had my first published piece and I’ve shot another one (yet to be published but will hopefully appear soon). This shoot is at the new Le Caprice restaurant at the Pierre Hotel, on 5th avenue next to Central Park.

The staff there was very friendly and the room was beautiful. The food looked pretty great (especially that smoked haddock trout, the one the knife and fork are cutting) but I didn’t try anything because I was meeting Jordana for dinner at Tipsy Parson that night (amazing meal).

You can read the review by Sam Sifton here. There’s a slideshow with my photos on that main page as well.

Enjoy!

February 1, 2010 - 11:43 am Dmitry - Nice work. Congrats!

Eating out in New York City for Haiti – Finally an excuse to eat bone marrow

The good people over at Time Out New York have been putting together a list of restaurants in New York City that are donating a portion of their receipts to Haiti on this upcoming Sunday, January 24th (also my birthday for those of you who haven’t gone shopping yet). just kidding.

So if you’re in New York City on Sunday, try to hit up some of the restaurants on this list. It’s really great that all these restaurants have gotten together for a good cause. So go eat something. Another site to check out is Dine Out 4 Haiti.

The following photos of mine are from shoots at just a few of the participating restaurants (and some of my personal choices you should visit on Sunday!)

If you’re in the Meat Packing district swing by Morimoto for some of the best sushi in the city:

Michael White’s Marea is the restaurant I’d choose if I want to spend a lot of money but get one of the best meals of your life:

Michael Psilakis is doing some delicious things on the Upper West Side at Kefi:

If you want sweet delicious BBQ try Hill Country:

I’m not sure I’m cool enough to eat here but I’ve tasted a few awesome things at Delicatessen:

Another Michael White/Chris Canon restaurant, Convivio is giving to Haiti:

If you want a beautiful wine selection, try Ardesia:

enjoy!

January 27, 2010 - 10:29 am Heather Parker Photography - Krieger! I just wanted to say congratulations on the achievement of getting published in the New York Times. Over the last few years your creativity and quality of photos has grown exponentially and I am sure the news organization is well aware they have one of the best photographers in New York City to be working with. Again, congrats and great work.

A fall wedding in New York City – Dirk and Chastity

Back in October I had the pleasure to work with a lovely couple named Dirk and Chastity. They started out getting married at the Riverside Church in Morningside Heights.  We took advantage of the beautiful leaves and October weather to take some photos in the surrounding area, and then head down to the reception. The party took place at Havana Central, also in upper Manhattan. The reception was held in a large private room in the back with beautiful booths and a really cool tile floor for the dancing. The flamenco band played some fiery Latin music and even offered some dancing lessons to the bride (who really didn’t need it as she was an amazing dancer). Everyone had a wonderful time laughing, drinking, and dancing into the wee hours of the night.

January 20, 2010 - 1:15 pm Brad Ross Photography - Looking good my man! By far NYC's top wedding photographer.

January 20, 2010 - 6:42 pm Daniel Stark - awesome work!

January 21, 2010 - 6:25 pm mpw - These photos are gorgeous!
